How to Blur Faces and Objects in DaVinci Resolve — Free Tutorial

If you've filmed in public, captured a screen recording with sensitive info, or shot a review with someone else's product in the frame — you've hit the moment where blurring something in post becomes non-negotiable. Privacy requirements, platform policies, and basic common sense all converge on the same need: obscure the thing that shouldn't be visible.

DaVinci Resolve handles this cleanly, and the free version is more than enough for most use cases. No watermarks, no trial limitations on the blurring workflow — the Fusion page gives you full node-based control over exactly where and how the blur lands. This tutorial walks through the complete workflow: static blur for objects that don't move, and tracked blur for faces that do.

Why DaVinci Resolve for Blurring?

A lot of online tutorials reach for After Effects or paid plugins when blurring comes up. That's overkill for most people. DaVinci Resolve's free version is a professional-grade editor available on Mac and Windows with no meaningful feature restriction on the blurring workflow — and the Fusion page gives you node-based compositing that rivals what you'd find in dedicated compositing software.

The node system looks intimidating at first but is actually well-suited to this task: you're literally connecting a blur node to a masked region of your clip, then optionally connecting a tracker to make that mask follow a moving subject. Once you've done it once, it takes under two minutes on any future clip. There's no equivalent "quick blur" workflow in most free editors that actually holds up for moving subjects — DaVinci's tracker is the reason this works so well without paying for Studio.

Step-by-Step: Blur a Static Object

Start on the Cut page and find the clip you want to work with. Right-click it in the timeline and select "Open in Fusion Page" — or switch to the Fusion tab at the bottom of the screen. You'll see a node graph with two nodes already connected: MediaIn and MediaOut.

Click on the MediaIn node to select it, then use the toolbar to add a Blur node (or press Shift+Space and type "Blur"). Connect it between MediaIn and MediaOut so the chain reads MediaIn → Blur → MediaOut. Now, click the Blur node and in the Inspector panel on the left, set your blur radius — start around 50 for a face-sized object. You'll see the whole frame blur. To restrict the blur to a specific area, right-click the Blur node, select "Add Mask," and choose Polygon. Draw around the object you want to blur. The blur now applies only inside your polygon. Adjust the mask's edge softness (feathering) to blend it naturally into the surrounding footage. Render out from the Deliver page when done.

Step-by-Step: Blur a Moving Face

Moving subjects require one extra step: a Tracker node to lock the blur mask to the face as it moves through the frame. Start the same way — MediaIn → Blur → MediaOut, with a Polygon mask on the Blur node, drawn around the face at the first frame where it appears.

Next, add a Tracker node (Shift+Space → "Tracker") and connect its output to the Polygon mask's offset input. Click the Tracker node and in the Inspector, position the tracker point over a distinct feature on the face — the bridge of the nose works well. Click "Track Forward" (the play button in the Tracker panel) and let DaVinci analyze the clip. Once tracking completes, the Tracker feeds positional data into the Polygon mask, meaning the blur region follows the face automatically. Play back to verify the blur stays on target throughout the clip. If it drifts, you can manually correct keyframes on the Tracker at specific frames. Render from the Deliver page when satisfied.

Blur Radius Settings

Not all blurs are created equal — the right radius depends on what you're trying to obscure and how much screen real estate the subject takes up. For faces, a Gaussian blur radius of 50–100 is typically enough to make the subject unrecognizable at most viewing sizes. Go higher (100+) if the face is large in frame or you're exporting at 4K. For license plates and small logos, 20–40 is usually sufficient since the detail area is smaller and the goal is legibility removal rather than full anonymization.

Mask feathering matters too — a hard-edged polygon looks visually jarring and signals the edit immediately. Set the edge softness to 10–20 pixels to blend the blur boundary into the surrounding image. This makes the blur look intentional rather than like a technical afterthought. If the masked object has irregular edges (hair, irregular logos), increase feathering to compensate for the fact that your polygon can't perfectly hug the shape on every frame.

Free vs Studio: What You Actually Get

For most content creators, the free version covers 95% of blurring use cases. Here's the honest breakdown:

If you're a YouTuber blurring an occasional bystander or license plate, free is all you need. If you're processing street footage with dozens of faces per clip and doing this daily, Studio pays for itself quickly in time saved.

Common Use Cases

The blurring workflow in DaVinci Resolve is broadly applicable across content types. Privacy and bystander compliance is the most common: if you've filmed in public and captured people who didn't consent to be in your video, blurring their faces is both a legal protection and a basic courtesy. License plates in street footage, parking lot shots, or car review B-roll are a regular target — most platforms don't explicitly require it, but it's standard practice to avoid enabling vehicle tracking.

Screen recordings with sensitive data are another major use case — personal email visible in a tutorial, an account number in a finance walkthrough, or a client name in a process demo. A quick static blur on those regions takes thirty seconds and prevents an accidental data leak. Competitor logos and branded products in reviews or comparisons may need blurring for platform compliance or brand policy reasons. And YouTube copyright compliance for logos — blurring a trademarked logo in the background of a shot is sometimes cleaner than trying to rotoscope it out entirely.
